Prespa Lakes

Prespa is a mountainous lake area of outstanding natural beauty, on the northwestern border of Greece with Albania and North Macedonia, at an altitude of 857 meters for the Little Prespa and about 852 meters for the Big Prespa. The two lakes that can be distinguished are Megali Prespa, which belongs to Greece, North Macedonia and Albania, and Mikri Prespa, which occupies mostly Greek territory (about 43.5 sq km), with a smaller portion to the west belonging to Albania (less than 4 sq km). Due to the drop in water level in the Little Prespa, the part belonging to Albania has almost disappeared.
The traditional villages of the lakes are surrounded by mountain ranges, such as Varnountas in the east and Triklari (Wasp) in the south. The Great Prespa, surrounded by the impressive mountain range, communicates underground with Lake Ohrid, and the water level of the two lakes sometimes changes.

A floating footbridge connects Agios Achillios with the opposite shore. Its benches are not only suitable for stopping but also for birdwatching. Many species find a safe haven here, among them silver pelicans, herons and cormorants. The island took its name from Agios Achillios, bishop of Larissa in the 4th century. In fact, here is also the homonymous church of St. Achilleios, one of the most important monuments of the Prespa region. It was built in 986 AD by the Bulgarian Tsar Samuel, who brought to the island the skeleton of Saint Achilleios from Larissa. The now ruined church of Agios Achillios is a three-aisled, timber-roofed, Middle Byzantine basilica with a narthex.

Another one of the villages of Prespa that is worth visiting is Agios Germanos. It is 48 km away from Florina. Built at an altitude of 1,040m, above Megali Prespa and close to the border with North Macedonia, it was once the head village of the region. Wander through the picturesque streets of the village to discover the beauty of the stone houses with traditional architecture. The homonymous Byzantine church of Agios Germanos stands out, dedicated to Germanos, Patriarch of Constantinople. It is a cruciform inscribed with an 11th century dome. A larger church was built next to it in 1882. There is another church in the village, that of Agios Athanasios (17th century). It is worth visiting the Byzantine Collection, an exhibition that focuses on informing the visitor about the history and monuments of the area and is housed in a renovated traditional building of the village.
One of the most important attractions of Agios Germanos is the traditional stone watermill, the only one of the 20 watermills in the area that has been fully restored. It was built in 1930 and had a triple use: for grinding grain, washing textiles and the swelling and 'thickening' of weavers.

Cave of Kokkalis

Just outside the village of Vrontero, you will discover the well-hidden "Cave of Kokkalis", which is an important memorial site of one of the most difficult periods in the modern history of Greece. It is the cave -visible today- that housed the last hospital of the guerrillas of the Democratic Army during the civil war. In 1948 and towards the end of the civil war, the guerrillas were confined around the lakes of Prespa. There was thus a need to find a place where a hospital for the wounded would be set up. The location of cave between the western bank of the small Prespa River and the Greek-Albanian border provided security and good accessibility. Its original area was about 70 square meters, but with various opening interventions it was enlarged to cover the basic needs. Just before the entrance, you will pass a small wooden bridge. In addition to the main chamber, there are other smaller chambers, circulation corridors, and the wooden staircase leads to the upper level, where lofts were created to make the most of the space. The cave was named after the excellent and pioneering surgeon Peter Kokkalis (father of the well-known businessman Socrates Kokkalis), who operated in the cave. He had even served as Minister of Health of the 'mountain government' during this period.
