Portraits of children, street vendors, cobblers, newspaper sellers, photographers, wandering musicians, and barmen; colorful cars and small scenes from the beach, Havana’s Plaza San Francisco, and the narrow alleys of the old town bring to the Mill Gallery the contemporary image of Cuba. Some photographs are printed on large canvases, while most are displayed on wooden cigar boxes, forming the artistic concept “Cuba on the box.”
Seven days in Havana, two hundred and fifty wooden boxes carrying the scent of tobacco, and dozens of black-and-white and color photographs were finally needed to capture Fernando’s parting words on Calle de los Marcaderes:
“…and remember: Cuba is not the buildings you saw, but the people you spoke with, whether inside or outside your lens.”
